Seal Pup Born At Brookfield Zoo On New Year's Day

BROOKFIELD (CBS) -- A grey seal was born at Brookfield Zoo on New Year's Day, the first birth of 2014 at a Chicago-area zoo.

The seal pup, a male, weighed just over 25 pounds when it was born Wednesday morning, according to the Chicago Zoological Society.

He is expected to gain several pounds a day, and will triple or quadruple his weight by next month.

The pup is the first-ever of its species born at the west suburban zoo and joins five other grey seals there, a statement from the Zoological Society said.

Brookfield Zoo now has the most grey seals of any North American institution.

The new mother, 10-year-old Lily, and her pup will remain off-exhibit for several weeks to allow them time to bond, the statement said.
