School Buys Drone, Captures 'Awesome Pictures
(CBS) -- A middle school in the far north suburbs is letting its students learn by using a drone.
After getting the drone as a gift from its student council last spring, principal Robert Collins says Hawthorn Middle School North in Vernon Hills is incorporating it into its STEM curriculum.
Collins says the school's finding many uses for it.
"We were hosting a gigantic cross-country meet at Vernon Hills High School and we used it for that - to show the starting line of hundreds and hundreds of kids. The other coaches and parents thought it was pretty cool.
"You get some pretty awesome pictures with that."
Students are never allowed to use it without adult supervision.
Although it can hover a thousand feet in the air, the school keeps it a maximum height of 300 feet.
