Schaumburg Considers Limits On Roadside Memorials

CHICAGO (CBS) -- You've no doubt seen them - makeshift memorials that pop up on roads where someone's been killed in a crash.

Now, one Chicago suburb is grappling with how to regulate them.

After a complaint from a resident, the village of Schaumburg is considering restrictions on those ubiquitous memorials.

One possible change: a 90-day limit on such displays.

Brian Townsend, the village manager, says it's a delicate balance, given the sensitivity of the issue.

"We're trying to obviously balance the concerns of this one resident with the bereavement process that some families go through."

If the board approves the time limit, Townsend says it would be enforced gently.

"We'll make notification to the family and then, give them six months to come to the village and collect those items."

The village board will likely vote on the proposal next month.
