Ryan Dempster Named Cubs' Special Assistant To President/GM
(CBS) The Cubs have named former pitcher Ryan Dempster -- always a fan favorite and well-respected member throughout the organization -- a special assistant to president of baseball operations Theo Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer, the team announced Friday morning.
Dempster will also retire from his 16-year major league career as a member of the Cubs. He last pitched in 2013 with the Red Sox, with whom he won a World Series. Dempster spent 8 1/2 of his seasons in Chicago.
He retires as a two-time All-Star and posted 67 wins and 87 saves for the Cubs between 2004-'12, the only pitcher in club history with more than 50 wins and 50 saves.
In his new role with the Cubs, Dempster will spend time with the club during spring training, visit the club's minor league affiliates during the season, evaluate amateur players leading up to the draft and perform professional scouting assignments.
