Man shot after trailing reckless drivers in northwest Chicago suburbs
MOUNT PROSPECT, Ill. (CBS) -- Mount Prospect police late Monday were still looking for the people behind what they have called a violent road rage incident, which required a shelter-in-place order early in the morning.
Tire tracks were still in the snow at the exact sight where the incident happened late Sunday night. A car involved end up right in front of a house – and police had the entire surrounding neighborhood on lockdown.
At 10:46 p.m. Sunday, Mount Prospect police were called to a Shell gas station at 1200 N. River Rd., at Euclid Avenue, where they found a man who had been shot in the leg. He was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
Officers learned before being shot, the victim had been following two cars that had been traveling recklessly near River and Golf roads in Des Plaines, and was getting ready to report their bad driving to 911, police said. The victim saw one vehicle – a gray Kia hatchback – lose control and crash near Camp McDonald Road and Mandel Lane in Mount Prospect – just east of Wolf Road, police said.
The victim saw two men wearing all black bail out of the crashed Kia and get into another vehicle – this one a Kia sport-utility vehicle, police said.
As the victim drove around the block, he saw the Kia SUV heading directly toward the front of his car while he headed east on Camp McDonald Road. He told police someone in the SUV fired a gunshot in his direction while driving past.
The victim realized he had been shot, and went to the gas station to get help in the store area, police said.
Crime scene technicians collected a shell casing at the scene where the victim was shot.
A records check showed the Kia hatchback – the car that ended up crashing – had been stolen, police. The Kia SUV used as the getaway vehicle had been stolen too, police said.
A shelter-in-place order was issued overnight as police searched for the perpetrators. No one was in custody late Monday.
"I'm a little concerned," said Ryan Kelley.
Kelley lives near where the violent incident happened - neighborhood Mount Prospect police had on a shelter in place order for hours.
"This is a nice family neighborhood – a lot of kids running around," Kelley said. "Definitely makes us a little nervous that that is getting so close to us out here."
Kelley did not learn about the shelter in place order until it had been lifted- and said it all left many in the area on edge Monday.
"I can't recall there ever having been a lockdown in the past, so definitely concerning and surprising," Kelley said.
Anyone with information or video footage that could help the investigation should call the Mount Prospect police Investigations Section at 847-870-5654.
"I hope they catch the people who were doing it," said Kelley.
Again, police did not address most of our questions.
