Riders In Spin Class Raising Funds For Cancer Research
(CBS) -- People raising money for cancer research are heading to spin class today.
A Deerfield native co-founded Cycle for Survival with his wife, who died of sarcoma in 2011.
Dave Linn says his wife, Jen Goodman Linn, started going to spin class while undergoing chemo and thought it was the perfect venue for raising funds for research into rare cancers like hers.
The couple started the charity in New York in 2007, where they lived, and the first city they expanded to was Chicago.
Dave Linn says Cycle for Survival now has 30,000 riders participating over various weekends in 15 cities.
He expects to raise more than $25 million this year and with that, he says the charity is close to bringing in $100 million in the ten years they've been doing it.
100 percent of that goes to research, Linn says.
They're able to do it because of partnerships with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (in New York City) and Equinox gyms which donate the space, bikes and instructors for the event.
Northwestern Basketball Coach Chris Collins, who went to Duke with Jen, has been part of the event for the last three years.
He says he loves the energy of the event and wants to honor his friend.
Collins rode this morning. The event runs from 9-5 at the Equinox gym at 200 W Monroe.
