Rev. Jackson Demands CPD Issues Order To Officers Not To Shoot People In The Back
(CBS) -- Rev. Jesse Jackson has an agenda for 2016 that includes a list of demands from the Chicago Police Department in light of the shooting incidents and allegations of cover-ups, reports WBBM's Mike Krauser.
Jesse Jackson's list of reforms that he says would lead to less distrust of police should include an order from the superintendent to officers to stop shooting people in the back.
"Mayor Daley put forth a mandate to shoot to kill, we want a mandate to stop shooting people in the back," Jackson said.
Jackson was referencing Richard J. Daley during the rioting in 1968 when he gave the order to shoot to kill any arsonist or anyone with a Molotov cocktail.
Jackson also says the city should release all videos of police shootings and that officers caught lying to cover up for colleagues be fired.
"Were it not for the camera of McDonald's death, all of them would have lied and would have gotten away," he said.
In a statement, the police department says it has extremely strict policies concerning the use of force. It says the vast majority of officers serve with distinction but in cases where officers are found guilty of wrongdoing, they are held strictly accountable.
