Restaurant Hold Fundraiser For Morgan Park Family That Lost Home In Explosion

(CBS) -- An Evergreen Park fast-food restaurant is lending a helping hand to a family whose home exploded in Morgan Park Dec. 2.

The Culver's at 9515 Kedzie Ave. is donating 20 percent of the proceeds from Wednesday night's sales to Darlene Sheahan and her family, who lost everything in the natural gas explosion, even the family dog.

Everyone was away from home -- the children at school, and Sheahan teaching at the Sutherland School.

Sheahan's youngest son Luke attends St. Rita High School and is friends with Patrick McKeever, who works behind the counter at the Evergreen Park Culver's Restaurant and suggested the fundraiser to his boss.

When he asked for 10 percent of proceeds, area franchisee Guy Hollis said he would set aside 20 percent of the night's sales, and that pleased the steady stream of customers who turned out, including Gary Kazragas, who said, "We had an excellent dinner and it helped someone on the side."

Culver's won't know how much was raised until Monday.

Sheahan said she is grateful for the assistance from Culver's and the community.
