Rescue Group Trying To Find Mom Of Abandoned Puppies
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A northwest Indiana animal rescue group said they're still trying to find the mother of four puppies who were dumped in a wooded area almost two weeks ago.
All Breeds Rescue Angels said witnesses along County Line Road in the Miller Beach neighborhood of Gary, Indiana, saw someone in a black SUV pull over and discard several puppies, then drive away on March 28.
A few minutes later, the SUV returned, and someone pushed another dog, believed to be the mother of the puppies, out of the vehicle.
"I'm so disgusted and heartbroken," Amy Segally, founder and director of ABRA said of the situation.
Three of the puppies were rescued right away. A fourth was found three days later, after a neighbor heard whimpering in the woods, according to ABRA.
The group said they are not sure if there might have been more abandoned puppies, but their mother was seen chasing after the SUV, and has not yet been found.
ABRA has been caring for the puppies – Dash, Smudge, Ozzy, and Xena – and veterinarians have given them a clean bill of health, aside from Xena being slightly dehydrated and emaciated after spending three days on her own before she was rescued. All four puppies are believed to be 8 or 9 weeks old.
Their mother is a tan and white dog, and will look like she recently had pups. ABRA was asking people in the area to be on the lookout for her, and contact local authorities if they spot her.
