Report: Cubs Could Have Joe Maddon Answer By Friday
(CBS) Until the World Series concludes this evening, mum will continue to be the word from free agent manager Joe Maddon and the Chicago Cubs amid swirling speculation that he will take over as Chicago's next skipper. It's MLB's practice to not allow its 28 other teams make personnel announcements while its LCS winners battle for the title.
It may not take much longer to find out, though.
The Cubs and Maddon are continuing to talk, and the franchise could have an answer by Friday, the Chicago Sun-Times reported late Tuesday night. Maddon's agent, Alan Nero, had previously said he expected a resolution by the end of this week as well.
While the Cubs and Maddon reportedly operate behind the scenes, current Cubs manager Rick Renteria continues to find himself in a tough spot. In general, he did his job in helping a young Cubs team make progress in 2014, but he may find himself on the outside looking in despite having two years left on his contract.
Renteria released a short statement through his agent, Ken Solomon, on Monday. It made no reference to him expecting to be the manager next season.
"I was hired nearly a year ago to be the Chicago Cubs manager," Renteria said. "Notwithstanding all the speculation, I continue to focus my offseason preparation on achieving the goal we established from the start: bringing a championship to Chicago."
Renteria hasn't heard from the Cubs amid all the speculation, the Sun-Times reported Monday.
