Heat breaks record in Chicago, and 90-degree days expected until next weekend
CHICAGO (CBS) — Following record high temperatures Monday, more unusual June heat continues this week.
Temperatures have not dipped below 78 degrees on Tuesday, potentially leading to a record warm low temperature for the day (old record: 77 degrees).
High temperatures rise well into the 90s under a mix of clouds and sun with breezy winds Tuesday afternoon.
A few scattered storms return on another hot day on Wednesday, but brief relief arrives on Thursday.
A lake-enhanced cold front blows through Thursday morning, dropping high temperatures into the 70s lakeside and 80s elsewhere. Cooling does not last long, however, as most areas return to the 90s Friday and Saturday.
Record temperatures of 97 degrees in Chicago on Saturday may be in jeopardy.

According to the Office of Emergency Management, residents can seek relief from the heat at community service centers, senior centers, libraries, police stations, and City Colleges.

Tips to beat the heat
- Stay hydrated – drink lots of water, AVOID alcohol, caffeine, sodas.
- Stay inside. If you do not have air conditioning, keep shades drawn and blinds closed but windows slightly open.
- Keep electric lights off or turned down.
- Minimize the use of your oven and stove.
- Wear loose, light, cotton clothing.
- Take cool baths and showers.
- Do not leave anyone (including pets) in a parked car, even for a few minutes.
