Rankings: Two Chicago Public High Schools Among Best In Nation
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Using data on thousands of public high schools across America's 50 states, U.S. News and World Report ranked the top schools in the nation. Two Chicago public high schools made the top 100.
U.S. News and World Report compiled the list with nonprofit social science research firm RTI International. Together, they looked at more than 21,000 public high schools.
Northside College Preparatory High School in the North Park community area was number 39 on the list. Payton College Preparatory High School in the Near North Side community area was number 41. They were the only Illinois schools to break into the top 100.
High schools had to pass multiple steps to be added to U.S. News's list. Schools could only be included if their students -- both overall and disadvantaged students -- performed better on math and reading tests than others students in their respective states. That's not all, U.S. News also set benchmarks for graduation rates -- an addition to this year's list -- and college readiness.
Young Magnet High School and Jones College Prep High School also made the list, at numbers 120 and 130 respectively. Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire was the first Illinois high school outside of Chicago to make the list, ranking 166 nationally.
