Rain storms and light snow returns to Chicago area

Rain turns into snow for Wednesday

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Showers and storms swept into the Chicago area Tuesday afternoon.

 A few storms could be strong, especially in Northwest Indiana. The main concern comes from isolated storms producing intense winds and hail. 

A special marine warning has been issued for the entire Chicago area Lake Michigan shoreline – from Wilmette Harbor to Michigan City. Open water on Lake Michigan from Winthrop Harbor to Michigan City and out to mid-lake is also under the warning.

Waterspouts and wind gusts of up to 40 knots are a concern with the showers Tuesday afternoon.

A rain-to-snow mix is forecast for Tuesday night, with temperatures falling to the low 30s. Wet snow is forecast for Wednesday morning, followed by a rain and snow mix for Wednesday afternoon.

A winter weather advisory been issued from 4 p.m. Tuesday until noon Wednesday for McHenry and DeKalb counties – with snow totaling 2 to 4 inches expected and winds gusting up to 40 mph. Winnebago, Boone, Ogle, and Lee counties west and northwest of the Chicago area are also affected.

Windy conditions are expected Tuesday night and Wednesday, with gusts potentially as high as 50 mph. Slushy snow accumulations will be likely, especially for areas northwest of Chicago.

Wednesday: Cloudy with morning snow showers, then a rain/snow mix in the afternoon. Windy and colder. High 39. 

Thursday: There is a chance for rain and snow before 1 p.m., then mostly cloudy skies. High 42.
