Proviso East High School Cancels Classes Monday, Tuesday After Fire
(STMW) – After a Saturday night fire Proviso East High School in Maywood, school officials decided to cancel classes on Monday and Tuesday, the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting.
Firefighters arrived at the school around 9 p.m. after reports of a fire, according to a statement from Proviso Township High Schools District 209.
Everyone who was in the building was able to evacuate safely, it said.
Proviso East Principal Tony Valente said 10 rooms were damaged and all classroom and office activities in that portion of the building would be relocated, according to the statement.
Sam Shahne, 27, was working at Maywood Express about a quarter-mile away from the school Saturday and saw smoke billowing into the night sky.
"There was a lot of heavy smoke but it seems to have died down now," he said about 10 p.m. "There's a really bad smell, too. The smoke is coming from the third-floor window."
Shahne added that nearly a dozen fire trucks and ambulances were on scene.
Meanwhile, the Maywood Fire Department confirmed crews were sent to the high school but could not immediately provide further details Saturday night.
