Protesters Begin Two-Day March Against Deportation
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Immigration rights groups are marking the National Day of Action for Deportation Relief.
WBBM's Steve Miller reports around 100 people are taking part in a two-day march from Cullerton and Ashland in Pilsen toward an immigration detention center in Broadview, Ill.
25-year-old Gaby Benitez is one of the marchers and says she is disappointed in President Obama.
"When he speaks to the cameras, he says he is on our side, but when the cameras turn off we know that what is happening instead is he is expanding programs like Secure Communities that criminalize immigrants even more and that every day 1,100 people are deported," said Benitez.
Like many of the marchers, Benitez is personally affected. She says her father was taken into custody four years ago and taken to a detention center.
