Preservation Group Puts Neon Signs On Annual List Of Chicago's 7 Most Endangered Buildings
(CBS) -- Neon signs are among the city's most endangered architectural features worth saving in the annual list issued by Preservation Chicago, reports WBBM's John Cody.
Usually the list is just buildings but one of the seven designations this year is an entire category: neon signs like the Drake Hotel, The Berghoff restaurant, Simon's on Clark Street in Andersonville.
"It's got a big herring with a Viking helmet on its head and a martini glass on its fin, I mean how incredibly funny is that?" said Ward Miller, executive director of Preservation Chicago. "They are artistic, they are comical, they are beautiful."
The group has also listed the Finkl & Sons steel plant grounds, the South Side Masonic Temple, Agudas Achim North Shore Synagogue, the Clarendon Park Community Center, the Main Building at IIT, and the Pioneer Arcade & New Apollo Theater on its list of the seven most endangered worth saving in the city.
