Poll: Emanuel Has Strong Lead Over Rivals, Not Enough To Avoid Runoff
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A new poll shows Mayor Rahm Emanuel holding a solid, but not comfortable, lead over his nearest competitor in next month's election.
An independent poll from Ogden & Fry shows, out of about 1,000 likely voters surveyed, Emanuel has about 39 percent of the vote, a substantial lead over Cook County Commissioner Jesus "Chuy" Garcia, the mayor's closest rival with 18 percent. However, it leaves Emanuel well shy of the majority he needs to avoid a runoff election.
If no candidate gets a majority of the vote on Feb. 24, the top two candidates would face off in a runoff election on April 7.
Of the other candidates, the poll shows businessman Willie Wilson with 11 percent, Ald. Bob Fioretti with 7.5 percent, and William "Dock" Walls with 2 percent.
However, 22 percent of those surveyed were undecided.
In a head-to-head contest, the poll shows Emanuel leading Garcia by 10 points.
