SWAT situation in Edgewater ends with barricaded suspect in custody

Police, SWAT respond to barricade of possible burglary suspect in Edgewater

CHICAGO (CBS) -- An hours-long standoff is over after police and a SWAT team responded to a possible burglary suspect inside an apartment in Edgewater.

The standoff started around 8 p.m. Tuesday night, in the 6000 block of North Winthrop Avenue. SWAT responded to the scene around 4:44 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Preliminary information says a man possibly armed with a firearm was barricaded inside a multi-unit apartment complex. 

Police believe the man is the burglary suspect. Residents were advised to avoid the area. 

The incident ended after the suspect was taken into custody around 9 a.m. Wednesday morning. 

Charges are pending.
