Police Question Person In Fatal Forest Park Hit-And-Run

FOREST PARK, Ill. (CBS) -- Detectives in west suburban Forest Park were questioning a person of interest Tuesday morning in the hit-and-run death of a bicyclist.

Jeffery Schultz, 40, was riding his bike home on Harlem Avenue near 14th Street around 11 p.m. Saturday, when a car struck him from behind about a block away from his townhouse.

Witnesses said the car was going as fast as 50 mph in a 35 mph zone, and fled the scene after sending Schultz flying through the air, and onto the sidewalk.

Stephen Lewis was driving on Harlem Avenue just before the crash. He said he pulled over to let another driver pass him, and then that car hit Schultz.

"He had to be going 45 (mph) or better when he hit that guy. He hit him pretty hard," Lewis said.

Witnesses said the car stopped briefly, then fled the scene. Witnesses also said Schultz was not wearing dark clothing, and the street lights were on, so he was easily visible to drivers.

Police said the car that struck Schultz was found in nearby Berwyn, but the driver was gone.

No charges had been filed as of 7:15 a.m. Tuesday. A police spokesperson said it was unclear when or if charges would be filed.
