Police Officer Shoots Suspected Fugitive On South Side
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Chicago police officer shot a man Friday morning in the West Pullman neighborhood, after the suspect allegedly pulled out a gun during a foot chase.
Around 9:30 a.m., members of a fugitive task force – including Chicago police officers and U.S. marshals – approached a home in the 11800 block of South Sangamon Street, where they were serving an arrest warrant.
Chicago Police Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the suspect came out and ran off. Police gave chase, and an officer shot the man after he allegedly pulled out a handgun.
Video form Chopper 2 HD showed a handgun on the sidewalk next to yellow evidence markers.
The officer has been placed on temporary desk duty while the Independent Police Review Authority begins its investigation.
"He will be placed on our routine 30-day administrative duties, pending the investigation, and the Independent Police Review Authority is now conducting the use of force investigation," Guglielmi said.
Police said the man was wanted for armed robbery and probation violation charges. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious but stable condition, with a gunshot wound to the lower body.
"I was walking in my front door and I just heard shots and I dropped down," said Elizabeth Nix, who lives on the block.
"What if I had walked out late to take my kids to school? Could have been one of my kids. That's what goes through a parent's head when it's this close to home."
