Police: Off-Duty Cop Shoots Bat-Wielding Man On NW Side

CHICAGO (CBS) -- An off-duty Chicago police officer shot a man who he says attacked him with a baseball bat Saturday night in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood and both men have been hospitalized.

According to Chicago Police the off-duty officer was walking in the area of Schubert and Monitor when he encountered an aggressive man holding his waistband around 10:30 p.m.

Police say he announced he was an officer and began a pat down. The man he was checking for weapons called out to family members in the area, police said.

That's when police say another man with a bat confronted the off duty officer and struck him several times.

The officer pulled out his gun and shot the man with the bat in the stomach.

The officer was hospitalized in fair condition with an arm injury and has since been released.The man he shot was hospitalized in critical condition.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the shooting and the officer will be on desk duty for the next 30 days, per department policy.
