Police Investigating 'Vehicle Of Interest' In Fatal Lake Shore Drive Hit And Run; Family Asks Driver To Come Forward
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The family of a teenager who was killed by a hit-and-run driver near Buckingham Fountain on Tuesday is grieving, after watching a Range Rover hit him as he was crossing Lake Shore Drive.
The person who was behind the wheel of that Range Rover kept going, and Anthony Tlahuel's family said that driver needs to stop hiding.
Tlahuel was trying to cross Lake Shore Drive near Buckingham Fountain around 9 p.m. Tuesday, when a stolen black Range Rover struck him and didn't stop. Police later found the vehicle abandoned on the loading dock of a building near Michigan Avenue and Illinois Street.
Paramedics rushed Tlahuel to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he later was pronounced dead.
Tlahuel was crossing the road to meet his friends and family at Buckingham Fountain for some summer fun at the time he was hit.
"He was a few steps away from his siblings, who were waiting for him at the fountain," said his aunt, Anna Vasquez.
Tlahuel's family has a message for the driver who hit him.
"I know it's hard, but you have to take responsibility," said Tlahuel's uncle, Jesus Vasquez. "As a human, you've got to take responsibility. It cost a life, a human life. There's no price for that."
The teen's family described him as a kind and popular kid.
"Well loved, kind, everybody liked him. Good soccer player, good guitarist, drummer singer, athletic. He was full of energy, always smiling," his uncle said. "We need justice, basically."
The Major Accidents Investigation Unit is investigating, and detectives were processing the stolen Range Rover for evidence.
No arrests have been made.
