Police Hand Out Whistles In Response To Jogger Attack
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Police handed out whistles Saturday morning to joggers near River North and Navy Pier in response to the recent jogger attack in the area.
Officers passed out information and whistles at two locations. The first near Kinzie and Wells, the same area where the jogger was attacked last Saturday; and second near Navy Pier. The effort is to raise awareness and safety in the community, WBBM's Mike Krauser reports.
We should consider that an attack on all of us, said Captain Melvin Roman.
"We are just trying to raise awareness," Roman said. "To let people know that they need to be careful, when they are jogging, especially when they are jogging alone. We are passing out information, passing out whistles."
The female victim was running in the 200 block of West Kinzie Street around 5:50 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10 near the Merchandise Mart, when she was attacked. A male suspect grabbed the woman, choked her and threw her to the ground, before he was interrupted by witnesses.
Chicago police arrested Carl Freeman, 34, on Thursday. The convicted felon is charged with two felony counts of aggravated battery, police said.
