Elgin Man Who Threatened Deputies Found Dead In Kane County Jail

CHICAGO (STMW) -- An Elgin man who was accused of threatening police officers with a fake bomb Tuesday morning when they tried to conduct an eviction at his home was later found dead at the Kane County Adult Justice Center.

Kane County sheriff's deputies arrived at the home in the 600 block of Forrest Avenue in Elgin about 8:30 a.m. to conduct a court-ordered eviction, according to a statement from the sheriff's office.

The homeowner, 51-year-old Piotr Dutkiewicz, came out of the house, put an item on the ground and said "bomb," police said, adding the item looked like a large battery with wires taped to it.

Dutkiewicz was arrested and his ex-girlfriend, who was inside the home at the time, left the building without incident, police said.

The sheriff's office bomb squad responded to the scene and determined the device was fake, police said.

Dutkiewicz was charged with disorderly conduct and threatening a public official, both felonies, police said.

Abut 4:45 p.m., Dutkiewicz was found unresponsive in the bathroom of the booking area of the Kane County Adult Justice Center, police said. He was taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said it does not appear foul play was involved. Sheriff's detectives are investigating.

Authorities have not been able to locate Dutkiewicz's family. Anyone with information about his relatives should call detectives at (630) 444-1103.
