Police: Drunken Driver Caught Doing 99 In A 35 MPH Zone

(CBS) – Suburban police on the lookout for drunken drivers early Thursday say they nabbed an intoxicated motorist who was caught doing 99 mph in a 35 mph zone.

A Riverside police officer clocked the speeder doing nearly 100 before the suspect's vehicle blew through a red light at 26th and Des Plaines around 1 a.m. When the officer pulled over the driver, he noticed a strong odor of alcohol.

The driver allegedly admitted he had been drinking on New Year's Eve and had a blood-alcohol level of 0.13, police said in a news release.

The driver, 20-year-old Miguel Angel Ocampo of North Riverside, was arrested and charged with several offenses, including DUI, speeding, reckless driving and having no vehicle insurance, police said.

Ocampo was one of seven motorists arrested during the New Year's holiday, as police used a state-federal grant program to target drunken drivers, Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel said.
