Police: Convicted Felon Arrested For Handgun Possession

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A convicted felon on parole was arrested Sunday after he pointed a gun at a person in northwest suburban Elgin.

Police responded Sunday at approximately 4:45 p.m. to a call of a subject with a gun in the 500 block of West Highland Avenue. The victim said he was standing near his car in a parking lot, when a subject approached, pointed a handgun at him, and fled the area, police said.

Officers located a subject matching the description of the offender minutes later. He was identified by the victim, police said. Officers also found a loaded handgun in a yard nearby.

33-year-old Oswaldo Garcia was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm with no FOID card, both felonies, according to an Elgin police statement. Garcia also faces misdemeanor charges of obstructing/resisting a peace officer and aggravated assault.

Garcia was released on parole in April 2016 after being sentenced to four years in prison for property damage in 2014, according to the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Elgin Police are holding Garcia pending a bond hearing before a Kane County judge.
