CHICAGO (CBS) -- Police were urging parents to go online before their children go out trick-or-treating this Friday.

WBBM Newsradio's Regine Schlesinger reports police said, before the kids go out for Halloween, parents should check the Illinois Sex Offender Registry.

"You got so many people out there. You just don't know who everybody is," Kane County Undersheriff Pat Gengler said.

Gengler said it's prudent to know whose door your kids are knocking on, and make sure they're accompanied by an adult. He expects a busy Halloween this Friday.

"Heading into the next day not being a school day, I think we'll have a lot of kids out there this year," he said.

Some suburbs are limiting the hours for trick-or-treating.
