Police: 1 Dead, 2 Injured In Gary Shooting

GARY, Ind. (STMW) -- One man died and two others were wounded in an apparent shootout Monday on a street in Gary, Ind., the Post-Tribune is reporting.

Brian Cooper, 22, who lived in Midtown, was dead at the scene when police arrived about 8:45 p.m., police spokeswoman Cpl. Gabrielle King said.

Cooper had been shot in the head while he sat in the passenger seat of a car driven by a 23-year-old Miller resident, who also was wounded. After the driver was struck, his car rolled to a stop and crashed into a parked car in the 1200 block of DeKalb Street, police said. The motor was running when officers arrived, and they found a loaded semiautomatic pistol on the floor at the driver's feet, police said.

A third man, a 19-year-old, was lying near the roadway about 100 yards from the victim's car, police said. He and the driver were taken to the Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus for treatment, but police said due to their conditions Monday night, the victims provided little information about the shooting.
