Plans Still Underway For Cubs' World Series Parade, Rally

UPDATE: Victory Rally Set For Friday

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The World Series champion Cubs are back home, after their historic 8-7 win over the Indians in extra innings in Game 7 on Wednesday, and are looking forward to celebrating with their fans, but plans for a victory parade and rally are still a work in progress.

"We're working with the city. We're aiming for Friday, but not everything's cleared up yet," said Crane Kenney, president of business operations for the Cubs. "It seems like that game already was two days ago. It was a great day for our city, a great day for our fans. I tell you, our fans showed up. We took that ballpark [Progressive Field] over today, and a lot of this belongs to them."

However, Chicago police sources said a Friday rally would be a stretch, because officers are exhausted after working so late Wednesday after Game 7 stretched until nearly midnight. Police sources said it looks like the parade more likely will be held Monday, starting at Wrigley Field and ending downtown, via Lake Shore Drive, for a victory rally at Grant Park.

Trucks carrying hundreds of portable toilets arrived at Hutchinson Field in Grant Park early Thursday morning, as did work crews who began setting up materials for a stage. Metal barricades also have been set up to Columbus Drive, leading into the park.

While city officials have not yet said the rally will be in Grant Park, that was where the Blackhawks had their rallies after their Stanley Cup championships in 2013 and 2015.

An official announcement of plans for the parade and rally is expected later Thursday.
