Plainfield Man Asks To Serve Detention In Place Of His 3rd Grade Daughter
PLAINFIELD, Ill. (CBS) -- A third grader at a Plainfield elementary school has to serve detention tomorrow - but her father has offered to receive the punishment instead.
The rule is: If you're tardy four times in a quarter at Meadow View Elementary School in Plainfield, you have to serve a half-hour detention.
But when an 8-year-old in third grade at Meadow View had racked up a string of tardies - and was told she had to serve detention - Plainfield School District 202 Spokesman Tom Hernandez says the girl's father told the principal that he should do the time, not his daughter.
"Dad brings his child to school every day. The principal said the child will still serve the detention. That's their normal procedure and the rules are the rules.
"But that dad is welcome to sit with his child for that 30 minutes."
Hernandez says the dad is to be commended because "clearly a third grade child is not responsible for traffic or weather conditions," but the school district "has to apply the rules equally to everyone."
