Landscaping worker shot, armed subject barricaded in northwest Chicago suburbs

Standoff continues hours after landscaping worker is shot in Schaumburg, Ill.

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (CBS) -- A landscaping worker was shot and wounded on the job in northwest suburban Schaumburg Wednesday afternoon, and a suspected shooter held police in a standoff afterward.

Schaumburg police said that around 3:30 p.m., they were called to the 800 block of South Braintree Drive for a person shot. One person was taken to an area hospital with a gunshot wound.

The Davey Tree Expert Company said the victim was one of its employees who was on a jobsite at the time. A Davey tree trimmer truck was on the scene.

"Our focus is on the health of our employee who was transported to the hospital.  Davey Tree will be cooperating with authorities and thanks them for their quick response and service toward keeping our communities safe, Jennifer Lennox, director of public relations for The Davey Tree Expert Company, said in a statement.

Police reported a suspect was barricaded at the scene after the shooting and would not come out. Police asked that anyone living in close proximity stay inside for safety, but some neighbors were seen outside watching.

Schaumburg police called for assistance from the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System.

Just after 4:45 p.m., officers were seen running from the scene to an area down the block. It was not known if they were chasing the suspected shooter.

An hour later, the officers remained at the scene with large guns.

One officer was seen with a long gun drawn while protected by a shield. Another was seen lying face down in position on the grass, also with a long gun.

Someone believed to be from law enforcement was also heard issuing some sort of command through a loudspeaker.

Braintree Drive was shut down between Cornell Lane and Cambridge Drive.
