Suspect Arrested For Streeterville Carjackings
(CBS) -- Chicago Police have arrested a 22-year-old man suspected in recent carjackings in the Streeterville neighborhood. Chicago Police are still searching for a second suspect
The carjackings happened in parking garages within three blocks of each other, the most recent one at a self-park near the Embassy Hotel, AMC Theatre and Lucky Strike Bowl in the 300 block of E. Illinois.
Anthony Delagarza parks in that garage every day and heard the details.
"The carjacker came up, bashed on the window really hard. pulled out gun, said give me your keys or I'll shoot you," said Delagarza.
Police say two suspects approached a 31-year-old man in his vehicle at the garage Monday morning. The suspects tapped on the window of his 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee, flashed a gun and ordered him out.
On Sunday, police say a 39-year-old man was walking in a parking garage in the 500 block of McClurg Court when two men in a Jeep Grand Cherokee approached him and stole his wallet at gunpoint.
That Cherokee may have been the vehicle they stole the night before. Police say a 2014 model was taken from a nearby garage Saturday night. A 31-year-old man and woman were pulling out of their parking spot when a white van blocked them from behind. An armed man forced them out of their Jeep and took off.
"It's a terrible thing. It's scary," said Dwayne Morris.
Dwayne Morris says he and other Embassy Suites employees got letters warning them about the crimes. So did neighbors like Mitchell Wilson at River East Center residences who park in a garage across the street.
"We knew that it was a target because there's weren't enough cameras. There weren't enough call boxes so it's been pretty much on our minds every time we go down there," said Mitchell.
The suspect police are looking for is considered armed and dangerous.
