Man Injured In Hit-And-Run In Forest Park

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Police in west suburban Forest Park were searching for the driver responsible for a hit-and-run crash that left a man seriously injured Sunday night.

Around 10 p.m., a 46-year-old pedestrian was trying to cross the street at Roosevelt Road and Des Plaines Avenue when he was struck by a vehicle, according to police. Police said the vehicle was moving at a high rate of speed on Roosevelt Road when it hit the man as he was crossing the street at Des Plaines Avenue.

The victim suffered major injuries -- his leg may have been severed -- and he was rushed to the hospital. His condition was stabilized Monday morning.

"There was a lot of blood, so they applied a tourniquet," Police Chief Tom Aftanas tells CBS 2's Dana Kozlov.

Police have released an image of the car, recorded by a nearby red light camera.

"The offending vehicle described by witnesses is a possible Chevrolet Camaro, black in color, with darkly tinted windows," Forest Park police said in a news release.

The busy intersection was blocked for six hours while evidence technicians tried to reconstruct what happened.

Police are now checking with auto-body shops in the area because the car left several pieces behind, Aftanas said.

"There's definitely front end damage to the vehicle," he said.
