Parents Of Northwest Side Boy, 5, Looking For Potential Marrow Donors
(CBS) -- A Northwest Side family is asking for help which could save the life of their 5-year-old son, who is now fighting his second battle with leukemia.
The first time Lucas Cervone had leukemia was in 2012.
His father Anthony says Lucas's last chemotherapy treatment was on Father's Day this year.
Then just weeks later, Lucas was diagnosed with another form of leukemia.
"My wife and I are amazed every day how he deals with it and gets through it and still manages to laugh and play and put a smile on his face," Anthony Cervone says.
"But then again, he's been doing this since he was 2. This is really the only life he knows."
Lucas is getting more chemotherapy, and Lifesource is helping the family search for a bone marrow donor.
"If I could get it out there to everyone: You have a chance to save a life. Maybe that life is my son's. Maybe it's somebody else's. But you have an opportunity to save a life," the father says.
A spokeswoman for the Lifesource Be the Match bone marrow drive says it's important that people show up to be swabbed because it's much more difficult to find a potential donor for Lucas because he's mixed race.
The Lifesource bone marrow and blood drive is from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the Jefferson Park Community Donor Center, 5316 N. Milwaukee Ave., Chicago.
