At Least Nine Tornadoes Touched Down Monday, NWS Confirms

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Survey teams with the National Weather Service have confirmed at least nine tornadoes touched down Monday night, when powerful damaging storms swept through the western and southwestern suburbs.
The tornado that hit Coal City was an EF-3, with winds estimated up to 160 mph. Its path was approximately three quarters of a mile wide, just east of Interstate 55, along the Grundy-Will county line.
The twister that hit Sublette also was at least an EF-2 tornado, but the team has not completed surveying damage in Woodhaven Lakes, which was hit hard. The path of that tornado was approximately one quarter mile wide.
The NWS also confirmed EF-1 tornadoes touched down in the towns of Mendota in LaSalle County and Harmon in Lee County and an EF-1 tornado in Kankakee county.
Survey teams will continue assessing damage on Monday, and will be updating its evaluations of the storm over the next few days.
