Pair Charged With Tossing Fire Hydrant Cap Through Car Window, Injuring Kids

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Two young men have been charged with felonies, after injuring two children when they threw a fire hydrant cap through a car window in the Little Village neighborhood.

Police said 20-year-old Luis Olvera and 18-year-old Jonathon Gonzalez shouted gang slogans and threw objects at a man's vehicle on the 2600 block of South Kedzie Avenue around 12:20 p.m. Monday.

Gonzalez allegedly threw a fire hydrant through a window of the vehicle, injuring the driver's two children – a 4-year-old and an 8-month-old, according to police.

Neither child was seriously injured.

Gonzalez and Olvera were arrested about half an hour after the incident. Each faces two felony counts of aggravated battery to a child. Gonzalez also is charged with a misdemeanor count of criminal damage to property, and Olvera is charged with one misdemeanor count of reckless conduct. They were due in bond court Wednesday afternoon.

Police have not said why the men targeted the victim.
