Ousted Chicago Police Superintendent Surfaces At Public Event, Is Warmly Received
(CBS) – Ousted Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy appeared Friday at a public event with his former boss and Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez.
CBS 2's Roseanne Tellez reports.
It was at the annual luncheon for the Irish Fellowship Club, which draws a couple of thousand people each year.
The packed ballroom at the Hilton Chicago probably helped make it less awkward for Mayor Emanuel and the police superintendent he just fired, to be in the same room.
CBS 2 spotted McCarthy as he was leaving, shaking hands with friends and heading to his car. He did not comment to reporters, nor did he speak at the event. But CBS 2 Legal Analyst Irv Miller, who attended the event, says McCarthy got a huge standing ovation.
"He got a great greeting; he appreciated it. He stood up. He waved to everybody," Miller says.
Alvarez also received a standing ovation while Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle looked on.
Preckwinkle has called for Alvarez to step down, in the wake of controversy over the fatal police shooting of a black teen last year. Emanuel fired McCarthy this week after seemingly standing with him last week, as volatile dash-cam video of Laquan McDonald's death was released.
There may have been awkward moments, but there were no fireworks to report Friday.
