Orange Line Train Strikes Pedestrian Near Western Station

(STMW) --Service on the CTA's Orange Line is partially suspended after a train fatally struck a pedestrian near a Southwest Side station Tuesday night.

At 6:12 p.m, an outbound Orange Line train to Midway Airport hit the pedestrian near the Western Station, CTA spokeswoman Tammy Chase said.

A female apparently jumped onto the tracks as the train was approaching, police said, citing preliminary information.

The woman, in her 20s or 30s, was found dead at the scene under the train, Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office could not immediately confirm the fatality.

As crews investigate, Orange Line trains are operating in two sections, the CTA said. Trains are running only between Midway and Kedzie, and separately betwen 35th/Archer and the Loop. Shuttle buses are taking passengers through the affected area.

Passengers can also use the No. 49 Western and No. 62 Archer buses as alternatives, the website said.
