Person critically hurt after fiery crash on Dan Ryan Expressway

CHICAGO (CBS) -- At least one person was critically injured in a fiery accident on the Dan Ryan Expressway Tuesday evening.

Illinois State Police said the accident happened around 8:40 p.m. on the southbound Dan Ryan just south of the junction with the Stevenson Expressway, around 2500 South.

A white jeep traveling at a high rate of speed failed to slow down in time to avoid a crash and struck the rear of a truck-tractor semi-trailer truck, ISP said. The impact was so strong that the vehicles burst into flames.

Photos showed both vehicles appeared to be severely burned.

One person was pulled from the car by the truck driver and was being treated by first responders in serious-to-critical condition, according to the CFD. The truck driver was not hurt. 

The crash caused major delays on the Dan Ryan. Traffic reopened around 10:14 p.m.
