CFD: 1 Killed, 1 Critically Injured In Roseland Fire

(CBS) --A house fire in the 100 block of East 103rd Place in the South Side Roseland neighborhood has left a 60-year-old man dead and a second person in critical condition.

Fire crews responded to the blaze at 6:50 a.m. and found three people trapped in the basement of the home, two of whom were unconscious. Both were taken to Roseland Hospital where one later died.

The fire department says the fire started after a pile of clothes was ignited by hot extension cords.

The gas had been shut of and the occupants were using space heaters, according to Chicago Fire spokesman Larry Langford, who says the building had an illegal electrical hook-up.

The home had no working smoke detectors.
