Off-duty officer fatally shot person during armed robbery in Elgin, Illinois

Armed robbery in Chicago suburb leads to fatal off-duty police shooting

ELGIN, Ill. (CBS) -- An off-duty sheriff's deputy fatally shot a person during an armed robbery in northwest suburban Elgin on Monday.

At 4:35 p.m., Elgin police responded to Walnut Avenue and National Street for a shooting and later determined an off-duty Kane County Sheriff's deputy was involved.

A Kane County State's Attorney spokesman said the sheriff's deputy shot and killed a person who has not been identified. The exact circumstances of the armed robbery and shooting were unclear as of Tuesday afternoon.

In a statement, Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain referred questions to the local state's attorney's office and said, "But I must say how proud I am of him to intervene off duty and how brave our deputies and officers perform day in and day out," apparently referring to the deputy involved in the shooting. He didn't elaborate on how or why the deputy intervened.

Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots. Neighbors who saw the aftermath of what happened were shaken by the incident.

One man, Rodney Hunter, owns a business near where the shooting took place. He came across the scene coming to his barbershop.

"I observed the body laying there because I didn't know what was happening at first," Hunter said. "They didn't say anything but they covered everything up so you couldn't see."

He added seeing the body on the ground near his business was "disturbing."

The Kane County Major Crimes Task Force is leading the investigation, police said.
