Off-duty CPD officer exchanges gunfire with armed person on Chicago's Southwest Side

CHICAGO (CBS) -- An off-duty Chicago Police officer exchanged gunfire with an armed suspect Tuesday afternoon in the Southwest Side's Marquette Park neighborhood.

At 1:37 p.m., the off-duty officer found the armed person in the 7200 block of South Spaulding Avenue. They exchanged gunfire, but no one was hit, police said.

The armed suspect fled the scene, police said. The off-duty officer was taken to a local hospital for observation, police said.

Police scanner traffic indicated that a 10-1 call for emergency police backup followed the incident. The CPD Investigative Response Team was also called to the scene.

As per protocol, the officer involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days, police said.
