Off-duty Chicago police officer killed in Tinley Park traffic crash

TINLEY PARK, Ill. (CBS) – An off-duty Chicago police officer was killed following a traffic crash in Tinley Park Saturday morning.

Police and fire crews responded to a call for the crash around 2:30 a.m. at the intersection of 179th Street and LaGrange Road.

Village officials say both drivers were taken to Silver Cross Hospital where the officer was pronounced dead. The other driver involved was transferred to Loyola University Medical Center in unknown condition for treatment.

The officer has been identified as 34-year-old Timothy Siwula, according to the Will County Coroner's office. Chicago police confirmed he was a probationary officer.

The intersection was closed as Tinley Park Police Department's Accident Investigation Team investigated the cause of the crash and whether alcohol was involved. The intersection has since reopened as of Sunday. 

No further information was immediately available.
