Off-duty Chicago police officer involved in shooting in Belmont Cragin
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago Police are investigating after an off-duty officer was involved in a shooting Wednesday morning in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood.
As CBS 2's Tara Molina reported, the area near Grand and Laramie avenues where the shooting happened was blocked off for hours. The scene is close to a gas station, but staff there said they didn't catch any of it on camera.
Officers were seen surrounding a silver sport-utility vehicle. At least 10 bullet markers were also spotted around the vehicle, which the off-duty officer was driving at the time of the shooting.
About a mile and a half away on Fullerton Avenue, there was a second scene. Bullet holes were left in a silver sedan, in which the other person involved in the shooting was traveling.
The shooting happened just after 8:15 a.m. Police issued a 10-1 call, or an emergency distress call.
Police would not tell us any details on the circumstances of the shooting.
The off-duty officer was taken to a hospital for observation and released.
An officer at the scene told us the other person involved in the shooting went to a nearby hospital and was later transferred, but no one will confirm that information or that person's injuries.
As is standard procedure, the officer involved will be on administrative duty for the next 30 days while police and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability investigate.
CBS 2's Molina followed up with COPA on the incident. A spokesperson said their investigators were on the scene Wednesday morning, and it's still early in their investigation.
COPA asked anyone with information to call them at (312) 746-3609.
