Off-duty Chicago firefighter shot multiple times confronting would-be car thieves
CHICAGO (CBS)-- An off-duty Chicago firefighter is in serious condition after being shot in the Bronzeville neighborhood Wednesday morning.
Fire officials said the firefighter was shot multiple times just before 5:30 a.m. in the 500 block of East 38th Place and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center.
A 40-year-old man was inside a residence as three offenders attempted to break into a parked car, Chicago police said.
Sources said the would-be car thieves fired 19 shots as the off-duty firefighter caught them trying to steal his Dodge Durango. The firefighter, a four-year CFD veteran from Engine 12, was shot five times in his hip, leg, arms, and chest.
Police said two of the offenders fled the scene inside a silver SUV while the third fled on foot in an unknown direction, police said.
The firefighter underwent a successful surgery and was expected to make a full recovery.
No arrests were made as of Wednesday afternoon.
