2 suspects charged after stabbing at restaurant in Oak Forest, Illinois
CHICAGO (CBS) — Two suspects were charged Monday morning in connection to the mass stabbing inside a restaurant in south suburban Oak Forest, Illinois, over the weekend.
Jaray Brown of Robbins and Camren V. Brown of Hazel Crest were each charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. A third suspect who was taken into custody has yet to be charged.
Police said three people were arrested after "several" people were stabbed Saturday afternoon at the restaurant. Officials said the incident stemmed from a discrepancy about the amount of money owed to one of the parties involved.
Around 2 p.m., officers responded to a disturbance at Jamaica Jerk Choice, at 6064 W. 159th St., and found "several" people who had been stabbed. The victims were taken to the hospital for treatment, but police did not elaborate on how many people were injured or how seriously they were hurt.
Three people were taken into custody, and police said the stabbing was an isolated incident and there was no threat to the public.
After the stabbing, some of the shops in the same strip mall at Golf View Plaza continued to operate, but it was certainly not business as usual. Large portions of the parking lot were taped off, and shoppers left wondering what had happened.
Yellow police tape cordoned off part of the parking lot hours after the attack.
One man who was leaving a neighboring business and didn't want to be on camera said police told him four people came to Jamaica Jerk Choice and had an altercation with at least one employee, who might have been able to fight back.
The restaurant's website says it is family-owned and operated, but customers who stopped by after the stabbing were left confused.
"I called here at Jerk Choice a couple of times. They weren't answering, so I came to pick up some food. I was going to order here, but I'm not sure what happened. So can't put an order in," said Akash Singh.
An employee at a neighboring barbershop said police asked them to review their surveillance cameras, though he didn't know if the cameras caught anything.
Both men are scheduled to appear at detention hearings on Monday.
