Northwestern Student Killed By Truck While Riding Bike On Campus
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Northwestern University freshman was killed late Thursday afternoon when she collided with a cement truck while riding her bike on campus in north suburban Evanston.
Candles now mark the spot where 18-year-old Chuyuan "Chu" Qiu was struck.
Around 5 p.m. Thursday, Qiu was riding her bike west on Northwestern Place when she crashed into a cement truck headed north on Sheridan Road. Police said the truck driver had a green light at the time, Qui rolled under the truck after the collision.
Police said Qiu, a first-year student from China, was not wearing a helmet. She was taken to Evanston Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The 38-year-old man who was driving the truck stopped after the collision. He was not issued any traffic citations.
