Northwest Suburbs Hit Hard With Snow, Residents Are Trying To Keep Up
CHICAGO (CBS) – Parts of the northwest suburbs are seeing up to an inch of snowfall an hour.
CBS 2's Vince Gerasole is in Mount Prospect where over several inches of snow have fallen and it is still coming down.
Some of the harder hit communities in the area are in the north and northwest suburbs with snowfall totals of 4 inches or more. Right now to be cliché, it looks like a winter wonderland, CBS 2's Vince Gerasole said.
The snow has been coming down in waves, with the majority falling Saturday night into Sunday morning.
A break towards dawn gave people plenty of time to shovel and plow, but in the last two hours, the snow has begun to fall more steadily and the suburban village's plows and snow trucks have been on the patrol.
Whether out and about for baby's first snowfall, or keeping ahead of the accumulations with a snow blower, people are taking it all in stride.
Snow is coming down more noticeably in the 5 p.m. hour, and crews are plowing major primary and secondary streets, as well in Mount Prospect.
In the city, Streets and Sanitation is concentrating on main arteries and they will hit the secondary streets when the snow let's up, which is expected around 8 p.m. Sunday night.
The Department of Streets and Sanitation added more trucks to tackle the snowstorm. 287 plows and salt spreaders are out Sunday night, clearing Chicago's main roadways. That is 70 more truck than they had Sunday morning.
