North Suburban Man 'Swats' His Own Home, Drawing Dozens Of Officers

(CBS) -- The scenario described Sunday night to the Lake County 9-1-1 operator sounded horrendous: a story of hostage-taking and murder in Beach Park.

But the Lake County Sheriff's Office says it was all a lie.

The call came in to 9-1-1 from 51-year-old Robert Bruckner, says Lake County Sheriff's Detective Christopher Covelli.

"He reported to sheriff's dispatchers that a man entered his home and shot his sister inside his residence. And this offender was still holding a gun to his father's head and holding the father captive," he tells WBBM's Steve Miller.

"While Robert was still speaking with 911 dispatchers, he indicated the attacker just shot his mother in the head," Covelli adds.

More than two dozen sheriff's deputies – on- and off-duty -- came to the scene. Paramedics were standing by.

Authorities determined the whole story was false and that Bruckner's family was somewhere else and all right. Bruckner was charged with disorderly conduct, a Class 4 felony.

Why did he do it? Covelli says Bruckner told authorities he was a drug user.
