North Side Dems Mourn Loss Of Committeeman David Fagus

CHICAGO (CBS) -- North Side Democrats are mourning the Christmas Eve death of one of their hardest working members, reports WBBM's Cisco Cotto.

David Fagus served as the 49th Ward Democratic Committeeman for 20 years. He battled kidney disease most of his adult life and had a transplant a decade ago that was initially successful, but later his body rejected it.

Alderman Joe Moore said Fagus pushed hard for everyday Democrats to influence politics.

"Both political parties are controlled wholly by the political leadership, the aldermen and committeemen, but in our organization we let the members decide who to endorse and who to support and we abide by their recommendation," Moore said. "That was something that David believed in and implemented and we are better for it."

The two were on opposite sides of Moore's first race for alderman in 1991 with Fagus serving with Bob Clarke. When Moore beat Clarke, the two became friends and worked together closely ever since.
